Climate and clothing during the trip
The average daytime temperature in Tibet during the trip is around 20°/24°. Higher up it drops, and on the passes the difference can reach 20°. Winter motorcycle gear is advised. The weather is usually dry and sunny but it can change and temperatures can fall quickly in the mountains. We will have sunny days, cold nights on the plateau, and perhaps a few hours of rain. Bring high sun protection, sunglasses, gloves and motorcycle rain gear.
Motorcycle gear: Helmet (a modular one is best), jacket, gloves, boots and a rain suit (two-piece is best). Days will be sunny while we ride, so winter gear that can vent and breathe is the most useful. Bring a warmer pair of gloves if you get cold on morning starts. A magnetic tank bag is practical for the camera, gloves and small items.
Road conditions and riding in Tibet
In Tibet there is little traffic and people do not ride fast. Most roads are tarmac and in good condition, though we may do a few kilometres of dirt approaching Everest Base Camp.
This circuit is intermediate to advanced. Because of the altitude you need to be in good physical shape. About 95% tarmac and less than 5% dirt (Everest national park).
Tibet is a demanding destination for anyone who does not have patience or is unused to delays. If you join the group, you will need to accept unexpected situations and delays linked to local conditions. This type of motorcycle trip has risks that you should know about and accept. A good mood and a sense of humour help.
Preventing altitude sickness.
We recommend pills against altitude sickness. Riding with symptoms is unpleasant and often avoidable with medication and proper hydration. We recommend Diamox or similar only under medical advice.
Note: Because of the altitude this trip is not suitable for people with:
