Bhutan

Welcome to the Kingdom of the Dragon
Welcome to the Kingdom of the Thunder Dragon. In the eastern Himalaya, Bhutan borders China and India. This Buddhist kingdom mixes history, culture, nature and high mountain country. It is one of the hardest countries for ordinary tourism to reach; riding there independently is even harder. Closed to visitors until a few years ago, the government sets a minimum daily spend of $250 per person to keep mass tourism out. It is the only state whose official measure is Gross National Happiness, in place of GDP. Festivals, colour, music and mountain roads make it a country motorcyclists want to ride. The roads, in generally good condition, run through bend after bend, forest and high passes. People's smiles and kindness stand out.
